Rated vs nominal volume
The nominal size on the sticker (“50-gallon”) is a marketing class; the rated storage volume in the certification record is the actual measured capacity, typically 5–10% less (a “50-gallon” tank often holds ~45–47 gallons).
Insulation, internal heat exchangers, and manufacturing variation eat into the sticker number. Certification records use the measured figure, which is why our pages may show 45 gallons for a tank marketed as a 50.
Sizing decisions should use first-hour rating anyway — two “50-gallon” tanks can differ by 20+ gallons in first-hour delivery.

Where the missing gallons go
Rated storage volume is a measured quantity — the water the tank actually holds — while the nominal size is a product class shared across a line. Several things eat the difference. The tank is not filled to the weld: there is space at the top for expansion and for the outlet fitting. Internal hardware takes volume, especially in heat pump models where a wrapped condenser coil occupies part of the shell. And manufacturing tolerance on a spun steel tank is not zero.
The result is consistent rather than random. On this site the “50-gallon” class is dominated by rated volumes of 45, 46, and 47 gallons; the 80-gallon class rates 72 to 82. Certification records, EnergyGuide labels, and federal standards all use the measured figure, which is why a model page here may say 46 gallons for a heater whose carton says 50.
This is not a scandal, and it is not a reason to buy a different tank. It matters mainly because comparing a rated volume against a nominal one — the number in the certification record against the number on a competitor’s box — makes a heater look 8% smaller than a rival that is physically identical.
The 55-gallon cliff
Federal efficiency standards step up sharply for storage water heaters above 55 gallons of rated volume. Below the line, a conventional electric resistance tank or a standard gas burner complies. Above it, the required efficiency is high enough that an electric tank essentially has to be a heat pump and a gas tank essentially has to be condensing — a different, more expensive appliance.
Manufacturers respond by keeping rated volumes at or below the threshold. The gas storage models on this site cluster at 48 to 53 gallons and then skip straight to 74 and above; exactly one certified gas model sits between 55 and 70 gallons. The 60-gallon gas tank has effectively disappeared from the residential market, which is why a household needing more than a 50-gallon gas heater is usually pushed to 75.
Heat pump models are unaffected, because they already exceed the higher tier by a wide margin. That is why their rated volumes spread freely across 36, 45–48, 59–68, and 72–82 gallons, and why the largest residential tanks sold today are heat pumps.
What volume does and does not tell you
Only about 70% of a tank is usable before delivered temperature drops off, because incoming cold water mixes with the stored hot water as you draw. A 46-gallon rated tank realistically supplies around 32 gallons of genuinely hot water before it starts to fade — three showers, not five. That is also the assumption baked into the first-hour rating test, which stops each draw once the outlet falls 25 °F below its peak.
You can buy back capacity without buying a bigger tank. Storing at 140 °F and fitting a thermostatic mixing valve to blend the outlet down to 120 °F converts each stored gallon into about 1.3 gallons of usable 120 °F water — roughly 30% more capacity from the same shell, with the side benefit of suppressing Legionella growth in the tank. The mixing valve is not optional: undiluted 140 °F water scalds adult skin in about five seconds.
Finally, check physical dimensions before ordering. A heat pump tank of the same nominal size is typically taller than the gas or electric heater it replaces — up to 92 inches in the certified data — and needs clearance above for the compressor housing plus air volume around it. Plenty of retrofits fail on ceiling height in a closet, not on capacity.
