Direct vent
A direct-vent water heater draws combustion air from outdoors and exhausts outdoors through a sealed two-pipe or concentric arrangement — no indoor air is used, eliminating backdraft risk and depressurization problems.
Because the combustion loop is sealed from the living space, direct venting is the safest configuration for tight houses and for mechanical rooms near return-air ducts. “Power direct vent” adds a fan to the same sealed arrangement for longer vent runs.

What sealed combustion actually prevents
An atmospheric water heater takes combustion air from the room and relies on a hot column of exhaust gas rising up a chimney. Both halves of that arrangement can be defeated by the house itself. Run a 400 CFM range hood, a clothes dryer, and a bathroom fan in a reasonably tight home and the interior can go negative relative to outdoors — enough to reverse the draft and pull flue gas back down the vent into the room. That is backdrafting, and it is how carbon monoxide reaches people who did nothing wrong.
A direct-vent heater is immune because it is a closed loop. Combustion air comes down a dedicated pipe from outdoors, burns in a sealed chamber, and leaves through its own pipe. House pressure has no route into that loop, so no amount of exhaust-fan activity can spill flue gas indoors. Cold-start spillage — the puff of exhaust before a cold chimney establishes draft — disappears too.
That is also why gas codes treat sealed-combustion appliances differently. Open-combustion water heaters are prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms and require specific combustion-air openings in confined spaces; direct-vent units are generally allowed in those locations precisely because they take no air from the room. In a tight new house, a small mechanical closet, or a basement with return-air ductwork nearby, this is usually the deciding factor.
Direct vent, power vent, power direct vent
The three labels get mixed up constantly, including by retailers, and they answer two independent questions. Where does combustion air come from — the room, or outdoors? And what moves the exhaust — natural buoyancy, or a fan?
A power-vent heater takes room air and uses a blower to push exhaust out a sidewall. A direct-vent heater takes outdoor air and lets natural draft carry the exhaust. A power direct-vent heater takes outdoor air and uses a blower. That last combination is the most flexible and is the single largest category in the certified data on this site, because it can be placed almost anywhere the vent run reaches while remaining sealed from the house.
The trade-off is straightforward. Natural-draft direct vent needs no electricity, makes no noise, and keeps making hot water in a power outage — but the vent run is limited to a few feet, so the heater has to sit on an exterior wall. Adding a blower buys long vent runs, often tens of equivalent feet depending on pipe diameter, at the cost of a 120 V outlet, a fan that eventually fails, and no hot water during an outage.
Replacing and terminating one
Matching the outgoing unit’s vent category is nearly always the cheapest replacement. Switching categories means new wall penetrations, new pipe, possibly abandoning or lining a chimney, and — going the other direction — a new electrical circuit. That work commonly adds several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars to a swap that would otherwise be routine, so read the vent type on the certified record before shortlisting models.
Terminations are where installations fail inspection. Codes require the terminal to sit above the expected snow line — 12 inches above grade is the usual minimum — and to stand clear of anything that could pull exhaust back inside: openable windows, doors, and mechanical air inlets. The clearance from openings scales with input rate, commonly 9 inches for appliances up to 50,000 BTU/h and 12 inches above that, with a much larger separation from forced-air intakes. The manufacturer’s instructions are the governing document and are frequently stricter than the code minimum.
Concentric terminations put both pipes through one hole with a single exterior cap, which looks tidier and simplifies flashing; two-pipe terminations separate intake and exhaust and are easier to route around obstructions. Either way the intake must not sit downwind of the exhaust in a way that lets the unit re-breathe its own flue gas — the failure that shows up as nuisance lockouts on windy days.
