How it works and what it needs
An atmospheric water heater depends on hot exhaust being buoyant enough to climb a vertical flue. A power-vent model replaces that physics with a blower: a fan mounted on top of the tank pushes exhaust through plastic pipe, typically to a sidewall termination. Because the fan makes the draft, the vent can run long horizontal distances, and the exhaust is cool and diluted enough for PVC, ABS, or CPVC rather than metal.
The control sequence matters for troubleshooting. On a call for heat the blower starts first, a pressure switch confirms it is actually moving air, and only then does the gas valve open. Any interruption to that chain — a failed blower, a disconnected pressure tube, a blocked termination, a bird’s nest in the vent cap — prevents ignition entirely. A power-vent heater that will not fire is far more often a venting or airflow fault than a gas one.
The blower also has to be powered. That means a 120 V receptacle at the heater, and it means no hot water during an outage — a real consideration in areas that lose power for days, where an atmospheric or natural-draft direct-vent heater would keep working. Noise is the other everyday cost: the fan is audible in the room, at roughly the level of a bathroom exhaust fan, for the duration of every heating cycle.
The combustion-air requirement people forget
Power venting solves the exhaust problem. It does nothing about the intake, because the burner still takes its combustion air from the room. That distinction — room air versus outdoor air — is exactly what separates power vent from direct vent, and it carries code consequences.
Gas codes require a confined space to be supplied with combustion air, and under the standard indoor-air method the room needs roughly 50 cubic feet of volume per 1,000 BTU/h of appliance input. A 50,000 BTU/h heater therefore wants about 2,500 cubic feet of connected space, which a small mechanical closet does not have; the remedy is louvered doors, transfer grilles, or a duct to outdoors.
It also means a power-vent heater can still be affected by house depressurisation. It is far more resistant than an atmospheric unit because the fan overcomes negative pressure at the vent, but starving the burner of air is a different failure from reversing the draft, and a tight house with powerful exhaust fans can do it. A sealed-combustion direct-vent unit is immune to both.
When switching to power vent is the right call
The most common reason is an orphaned chimney. When a homeowner replaces a natural-draft furnace with a condensing model that vents in PVC, the water heater is left alone on a masonry chimney sized for two appliances. That oversized, now much cooler flue often cannot maintain draft, and condensation inside it can damage the liner. Moving the water heater to a sidewall power vent is the standard fix, and it is usually cheaper than relining the chimney.
The second is placement. If the practical location for the tank is nowhere near a flue — a basement corner, a converted space, an addition — power venting is what makes it possible. Budget a few hundred dollars more for the appliance than an atmospheric equivalent, plus the wall penetration, pipe, and an outlet if one is not already there.
Against that, if you have a working chimney, a heater that fits it, and outages that matter to you, an atmospheric unit remains simpler, cheaper, quieter, and functional without electricity. Matching the outgoing vent type is nearly always the cheapest replacement; changing categories is a deliberate decision that should be paid for by solving a specific problem.
